The
municipality of Vion was formed recently, comprising
former separate municipalities.
Vion
was a center of habitation in both Mycenaean and Classical
times. It reached a peak in the Roman period as one
of the cities of the Commonwealth of Free Laconians,
but the disasterous earthquake of 275 AD brought its
prosperity to an end. About the middle of the 12th century
the monks of the region built a series of small monasteries
on Maleas which form the so-called "Small Aghion
Oros" (Athos).
The
name Vatika which is used to describe the general area
occurs in the 15th century in the Venetian archives
as the name of a small fortress which changed hands
many times betweeb the Venetians and the Turks. Evidence
of the age-long history of the locality is provided
by the significant archaeological finds and the remains
of the ancient city near present day Neapolis.
The
products of the plain of Vatika is significant. We must
mention the famous early-growing tasty onions as well
as the excellent olive-oil, olives, honey, wine and
garlic. Finally seafood is plentiful and delicious as
are the fish caught by the large fishing fleet (250
boats).
Apart
from the Neapolis Carnival and the local fair of the
Holy Ghost, fairs are held in the villages of the municipality
all through the summer.
There
are hotels and apartments to rent in the area.
