The
Municipality of Pellana has its headquarters in Kastori
and has a population of 4000. The inhabitants live mainly
by farming and animal rearing. Olive trees, maize, garden
produce and clover are the chief cultivations. The honey
of the region is also very good, and there is a unit
for milk cows.
HISTORY
The region has been inhabited since the Mycenaean era
and had already played an important part, since the
history and development of ancient Pellana kept pace
with that of Sparta. In the nearby area the visitor
may see the magnificent royal Mycenaean tombs and the
acropolis of ancient Pellana at the top of the hill,
where many finds have come to light, as well as the
Sanctum of Asclepius, a few meters from the Pellanida
spring.
A
remarkable example of religious spirit and folk art expression
is the wwodcut icon screen in the church of Our Lady at
Kastori. It is the work of an anonymous folk wood carver
and is composed of threee independent parts that correspond
to the three areas of the Sanctuary.
