The
new Municipality of Monemvasia was created by the "Capodistrias"
plan. Its capital is the town of Monemvasia. The settlement
of New Monemvasia known as "Gefira" at the
entrance to the castle (Kastro) provides tourist facilities
for the Castle and the surrounding area. It has many
units of accomodation (hotels and apartments to rent)
a camping site and a number of tavernas, cafes and bars.

Apart
from its development as a tourist resort, the Municipality
of Monemvasia has very good agricultural products (olive
oil, citrus fruit) a small craft industry producing
traditional almond sweets, confectionery and sesame
sweets of very high quality, as well as hand-made pasta.
The local wines are exceptional and some of these are
organically produced. In the last few years the Municipality
has developed many cultural activities throughout the
region. The major event is the local national celebration
on the 23rd of July and the History & Art Symposium
which takes place around the same time. In May there
is the festival of Our Lady Chrysaphitissa.
