The
Municipality of Itylos is one of the five municipalities
of Mani created by the "Capodistrias plan".
It comprises 81 settlements, which make up 18 municipal
departments. Of the 118 traditional settlements of Peloponnese
98 are in Mani and of these 67 are in the Municipality
of Itylos.
The
earth of Mani is bare and dry and yet it constitutes
one of the 17 botanical paradises of our country, owing
to the rare flora. The products are few but of excellent
quality, like the fine olive oil. Mani has been inhabited
since Paleolithic times.
The
Municipality of Itylos is one huge museum. It offers
excellent accomodation in almost all the regions and
authentic Mediterranean cuisine with local products.
Itylow is situated on the height here, with the castle
of Kelefa opposite. There is also the long beach of
New Itylos, stretching from Karavostasi to Limeni, where
we have the palace of the Mavromichalis family, the
castle of Maini, Tigani, Koita and its famed church
"Tourloti" and the well known settlement of
Vathia with its tower-houses. It is also worth visiting
the towers of Itylos, of Charia, of Nomia, of Pirgos
Dirou and the other small settlements of the Municipality.
At
"Kalamakia" of Western Mani, exactly at the
entrance to the Bay of Itylos, there is the well preserved
cave, one of the many in Mani inhabited since Paleolithic
times. The caves of Diros, Glyfada, Alepotrypa and Katafygi
are to the south of Areopolis.
Various
events are organised in the Municipality of Itylos.
On the 17th of March the beginning of the Greek Revolution
of 1821 is celebrated in Areopolis. On the last Sunday
of June, there is a celebration in honour of the women
of Mani, who repulsed the hords of Ibrahim at Diros
in 1826.
