The
Municipality of Gythion, with its seat at Gythion is
one of the largest in the prefecture of Laconia. It
receives many visitors and has plenty of hotels and
camping sites. From Trinisa and Selinitsa, Mavrovouni,
Kamares, Vathy, Ageranos, to Skoutari, are to be found
the loveliest beaches in the bay of Laconia, where the
sea turtles find refuge.

A
little to the south rises the hill of Mavrovounio, where
stands the castle of Goulades and to the west stretches
the 3km long beach of Mavrovounio that winds down to
Skoutari. To the south-west of Gythion on a steep, high
hill, near the settlement of Marathea, stands the castle
of Passavas (13th century) on the site of the ancinet
town Las. On the pass between Gythion and Itylos there
is the settlement of old Karioupoli, with strong Byzantine
elements.

| The
cave of captain Zacharias near the villages of Malevrion,
a little after Skoufomiti, belongs to the Municipality,
as does the gulf of Pierrakos just before Skyfianika |
